Every so often, somebody will bring in a device, apparatus, contraption, thingamajig, or gizmo that your Tech Wizard chronicler has never seen before.
These devices are routinely cheap knockoffs made from disreputable or fly-by-night manufacturers with brand names that nobody has ever heard of.
In addition to not functioning properly, a cheap knockoff may in fact be dangerous to use to access the Internet due to the fact that such a device would have subpar (or even non-existent) security — making it (in the immortal words of Bugs Bunny) “a wolf in cheap clothing.”
Counterfeit devices
Unfortunately it is easy for malicious companies to create fakes of 21st century devices — and not surprisingly, counterfeiters try to create faux versions of the more expensive, high-end devices.
If your device is not working properly and/or comes in shoddy packaging, return it.
Reputable mystery gadgets
There are also reputable (at least as far as we know) mystery gadgets that are either new to the market and/or not part of the mainstream technology market.
These are niche products that often fulfill a specific, specialized function.
(Although it is sometimes less than clear what that specific function might be.)
If you have such a device, try to identify it by its brand name and then try searching the web for more information on it — including its manual.
Rule of thumb: Whenever you are confronted with a new device…
1. inspect it carefully 👀
2. if necessary, search the web for info on it 🔎
3. noodle around with it (if possible)
4. understand what it is and what it can do 🤔
5. document your findings / write down your
thoughts 📒
